When she was found wandering alone in the woods, 10 year old Libby was well into her senior years. Alone, and scared, she wasn’t quite sure what to make of the strange people in uniform who picked her up, but the animal control officers were there to bring her to safety. Licking her gray muzzle, she gently went away with them, and was brought to a big building with big letters outside: “the Connecticut Humane Society”.

Little did this sweet black lab know, her life was about to change in the best way! (Spoiler alert: Libby will get adopted by a very sweet family who had room in their heart for a senior black lab!)

After entering those big glass doors, people in scrubs came around to look her over. Luckily, despite a couple of the usual aches and pains of old age, Libby was in pretty good health, but it wasn’t clear if she’d been spayed yet. Typically dogs will have a green tattoo indicating their status, but Libby had no tattoo and her hormone levels suggested she might need the procedure. Her behavior assessment — the other checkpoint for pets who come to CHS — was easy and there were no quirks Libby would need to work on before rehoming. She of course would be a part of the enrichment program during any time she’d spend in the shelter, but this good girl wasn’t going to need any special training. All that was left was her medical treatment, and then she’d be cleared for adoption.

There were a few other pets already in line for procedures with the veterinary team, so while she awaited a spot on the surgery schedule, she was sent to foster care, where she was given a comfortable bed to sleep on, at least two walks a day, and plenty of yummy food and treats. Life was good! And in no time at all, Libby got to visit with Dr. Gleason for her surgery, and after a slow but successful recovery, Libby was ready to find a loving family and a peaceful home of her own.

And love was not a long wait away. Libby’s sweet face drew in a couple of families, and the right match soon fell in love and took Libby home. From wandering the woods to relaxing in a retirement home, Libby’s living in luxury now!
