Volunteer FAQs
Do you take volunteers who are under 18 years old?
Volunteers must be 18 years old to participate in most volunteer programs. The home foster care program is suitable for family volunteer experiences. CHS also encourages young people to consider one of the many other ways to help pets: organize a supply drive at school, with a Scout troop, for a birthday, etc.; make one of the craft projects detailed on this website, such as no-sew beds for the cats or bandanas for the dogs; or get involved in the lemonade stand challenge.
Does CHS accept volunteers who need court ordered service?
Yes. Click here to learn more about volunteering to complete court ordered service.
Can I volunteer whenever I want? Do I need to commit to a schedule?
CHS requires volunteers to make a 6-month commitment to the organization. The amount of time per week or month will depend on the program in which you are placed.
Why do I have to fill out an application and go through an interview process?
The application and interview process allows CHS to match volunteers with the program that best suits their skills and interests.
I want to walk dogs but I don't see any openings. Don't you always need dog walkers?
Check the website frequently if you don’t see dog walking available – volunteer openings are updated often depending on the pets’ needs.
I want to cuddle cats but I don't see any openings. Don't you always need cat cuddlers?

I don't see any volunteer openings that are a good fit for me. How else can I help?
Check the website frequently if you don’t currently see a role that would be a good fit for you – volunteer openings are updated often depending on the pets’ needs.
In the meantime, if you want to help in a different way, the pets always need people to hold collection drives for food and supplies. People can also hold Facebook fundraisers for the critters for their birthday or another special occasion, or hold a different kind of fundraiser, like a dress-down day at work! Check out CThumane.org/getinvolved for ways to make a difference today.
What volunteer program needs the most help?
CHS especially needs new foster homes for pets who aren’t yet ready for adoption, as they may be too young, receiving medical treatment, or awaiting a special doctor appointment. Fosters are provided will all supplies and veterinary care for the pet. Click here to learn more about foster care.
