PETtalk: Pet Birds

Birds can make wonderful pets, but their care is quite different from dogs, cats and other small fluffy animals. These feathered companions have a unique set of needs. Their ability to fly adds additional challenges to ensuring their safety in your home.

This month, the Connecticut Humane Society welcomes speaker Dr. Aubrey Traina to share her expertise on all things avian (bird). Avian husbandry, diet and common health concerns will be discussed. A live Q&A will follow their presentation. You can also submit your question about birds ahead of time during registration.

About the Speaker

Dr. Traina is a New Orleans native and moved to New England in the fall of 2022. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biology and a minor in chemistry from the University of New Orleans in 2014. Dr. Traina graduated from the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2020. While in veterinary school, she also received her certified veterinary acupuncturist license (CVA) from the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2019. Throughout veterinary school, she volunteered with the Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana, caring for and rehabilitating raptors and wildlife. After veterinary school, she completed a one-year internship at SEAVS, an avian and exotics-exclusive practice outside of Washington, D.C. Now, after her recent move to beautiful New Hampshire, she cares for companion exotic, aquatic and avian pets at Hopkinton Animal Hospital!

When she’s not working, Dr. Traina enjoys volunteering with the New England Aquarium, scuba diving, New Orleans Saints football, and is excitedly completing her goal of trying all the lobster rolls New England has to offer! Her home menagerie includes a German shepherd, two cats, axolotls, and a crested gecko.
