When Gus first arrived at the Connecticut Humane Society, he had a bit of a reputation.

The 14-year-old pug mix could be a little grumbly, especially when he wasn’t feeling his best. And Gus certainly wasn’t feeling his best.

He was extremely itchy, with patches of missing fur and uncomfortable scabbing. Arthritis made it difficult for him to move with ease, and he was also being treated for Lyme disease. This senior boy had a lot going on, and he needed time to feel better.

Gus’ previous family had moved away and weren’t able to bring a pet with them. Fortunately, Gus had plenty of time, care, and patience waiting for him at CHS.

His days began to look a little different as his medical needs were addressed. Injections brought relief from his persistent itching. Special food helped manage his allergies, and medication treated his other ailments. He had a warm bed to curl up in and regular walks to keep his arthritic joints moving.

And as the behavior team worked with Grumbly ol’ Gus, something even more important was discovered: a very sweet dog who was a bit misunderstood. After a bit of work, Gus finally began to let his softer side show. Just not with the veterinary team (they did have to poke him with a lot of needles after all!).

Gus spent four months in CHS’ care while he healed and waited for the right family to come along. When a family saw the wonderful dog beneath the gray muzzle and grumbly first impression, they knew Gus belonged with them.

Now, this 14-year-old senior is settling into life with a family who adores him.

Gus’s story is a beautiful reminder that senior pets aren’t defined by their age or by the challenges they may face when they first arrive. They still have favorite things to discover, new memories to make, and so much love to give.

Sometimes, all they need is someone willing to look a little closer.

For Gus, that made all the difference.
