PETtalk Disaster Preparedness for People and Pets

Join CT Humane Society and Wanda Vollmer of Peace of Mind Preparedness to learn how to better be prepared for the unimaginable.

Emergencies in Connecticut take many forms. Winter storms, power outages, flooding, and more can quickly disrupt daily life for people and pets. This practical, engaging presentation explores simple preparedness steps that reduce stress, keep families together, and protect the animals we love.

Led by Wanda Vollmer of Peace of Mind Preparedness, this free workshop will cover three essential basics: staying informed through emergency alerts, building realistic disaster kits for people and pets, and creating a communication plan that works. Attendees will leave with clear, compassionate guidance and easy action steps they can take right away.

Reading to Pets in Newington

A purr-fect way to have your child practice their reading aloud skills: Sign up for a session of Reading to Pets at CT Humane Society.

Join the Connecticut Humane Society at the Newington location for a limited-run program, “Reading to Pets”. Designed for children ages 6-18, the session will help sharpen your child’s reading skills while allowing them to spend quality time with a pet in care at the shelter.

During their session, children will have the opportunity to read to cats or small pets, all of whom are excited to lend a furry ear to any new or seasoned reader. Bring your favorite book or pick from one provided by CHS.

Watch your child’s confidence in reading grow as they bring comfort and compassion to shelter pets. Reading sessions are 20-minutes long. Pre-registration is required.

There is a registration fee of $12.51 per child, per session. One adult must accompany their reader for the entire session. Due to space limits and safety requirements, only one reader and one adult per reservation. Siblings and additional adults are not able to accompany you and your child to the session.

Important Notes for Parents of Participants:

· This program does not include hands-on interactions with the pets.

· Reading sessions will occur outside of the pet’s enclosure. Attendees are unable to enter the pet’s enclosure for any reason.

· CHS will provide chairs for the reader and the adult. If preferred, children are welcome to sit on the ground next to the pet’s enclosure. Blankets will be available.

· Each session is 20 minutes long. If you are running late, it will cut into your reading time.

Join a guided workshop to crochet a pet blanket for your furry friend or a CHS pet. No experience needed—perfect for all skill levels!

Join CHS for a fun-filled night of crochet. An experienced instructor will guide you through the steps to create a beautiful and functional blanket.

You’ll leave with your creation and the skills to continue making blankets on your own. Don’t have a pet? This blanket makes a heartfelt gift or can be donated to the shelter pets.

Hartford Marathon Foundation: Mystic Half Marathon and 10K Event

Experience the beautiful Mystic shoreline community at the Hartford Marathon Foundation and Mystic Half Marathon and 10K!

Enjoy scenic views for 13.1 or 6.2 miles, running from Olde Mistick Village, past historic ships, through the charming downtown, with race finish at Mystic Aquarium.

Your paw-ticipation in this race means that you are a part of a community that shows up mile after mile for those in need. Now’s your chance to lace up, set your pace, and run for local pets who are counting on someone to carry them to the finish.
