When Nova arrived at the Connecticut Humane Society in September of 2025, the 3-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier had a lot to work through. Allergies had made her previous home no longer the right fit, and she also had two injured knees that needed extensive veterinary care.
Nova’s medical journey called for time, patience and a coordinated team effort. Her allergies were alleviated over time with medicated baths and a change in her diet. Her knees required a bit more work though. Earlier this year, Nova had a bilateral TPLO surgery thanks to community veterinary partnerships and support from friends like you. Her recovery involved physical therapy with an outside specialist, carefully managed exercise, keeping her at a healthy weight, warm compresses, and lots of light massages (her favorite part).
Over the course of her 233 days at CHS, Nova received 59 veterinary exams, 8 diagnostic tests and 18 different medications. Not to mention her routine vaccinations, and of course, her surgery. Every step of her care was important for recovery, but also so that she didn’t behaviorally decline due to pain or stress in the shelter.
Comfort was just as important as treatment. Nova spent time in 8 loving foster homes before and after surgery, giving her places to rest and recover in a home environment. Foster families made the long process a little easier, while CHS veterinary staff kept a close eye on her health and worked to give her the best possible chance at a comfortable future.
And through it all, Nova was still Nova: a big, friendly girl with a big personality. She could be vocal now and then, but she was also food-motivated, eager to work on training and a favorite among the people who got to know her. Her warm nature made an impression on staff and everyone she met.
In mid-May, after months of treatment and recovery, Nova was adopted by a loving family. Her knees had healed beautifully, and she was ready to begin a new chapter with people who could give her the care and affection she deserves. It’s thanks to community members like you that stories like Nova’s are possible!
