Honoring Waterford Volunteer Nina Arremony

Volunteer Role: Landscaping

Length of Service: 11 months

I chose CHS for my volunteer work because… the Connecticut Humane Society is an organization that has been dedicated to the welfare of animals for many years. My grandfather worked for a humane society in Florida and I saw pictures of him as a little girl with all of the exotic animals including a spider monkey named Penny. I always wanted a spider monkey after that to dress up in little dresses! I’ve liked animals and have been around them my whole life. One of my dogs we adopted from CHS many years ago. I have always known how much good CHS has done and wanted to help in any way I could. The landscape assistant position sounded like a good fit for me. I work at a local greenhouse and have gardened for many years!

Something new I learned by volunteering at CHS was… how much hard work and dedication it takes to take care of all the animals and maintain the facility on a daily basis.

My advice for new volunteers is… your reliability is so important to the welfare of the animals. In my case I don’t work with the animals but will help to maintain the landscaping on the outside so it’s more inviting for all who visit.

My favorite things to do outside of CHS are… I love to garden and bake- I made my son’s wedding cake a couple of weeks ago! I also love to sew and enter items in the local fairs.

My hidden talent is… I have made many gingerbread houses with our local church. I have taught gingerbread house baking at Norwich Adult Education.

If I could have any job in the world, it would be… the job I have now which allows me to be surrounded by many plants, trees and flowers in many beautiful colors.
